Basics of Fantasy Football

Posted: June 1st, 2009 under Recreation and Sports.

For a hardcore football fan, controlling a professional football team can be the ultimate dream. To make this dream a reality, there is fantasy football. Fantasy football is an amazing pastime for those who are really into football. You get to compose a team of professional football athletes and compete against your friends and even strangers.

Many people are now getting into this kind of stuff. It is clean fun and an excellent way to express your love for the game. You won’t need any fancy stuff like costumes, men’s cufflinks or others to play this game. If you want to try your hands in this kind of game, there are some few simple things you need to know to help you get started.

The Types of Leagues

In any kind of fantasy baseball, the leagues are composed of 8 to 16 fantasy teams. Each one of the teams is also controlled by a different contestant. Then, each contestant take turns in choosing the players for their team until they fill all their slots. As a team owner, your responsibility is to choose a starting lineup, sign replacement players, and make trades with others if necessary.

The Roster and Lineups

The number of players in your football team can vary depending on the league. However, it usually includes two quarterback, three running backs, two tight ends, three wide receivers, two defensive units and one kicker.

What you must remember is to submit a lineup of your players each week. Also, you must take into consideration the match-ups and injuries. Any changes you made with the lineups must be done before the beginning of each game. This is important because in case you fail to make any necessary changes beforehand, the state of your lineup will remain the same as the previous week.

The Scoring System

There is a wide variety of scoring system that you and your buddies can use but there is a general scoring system that most players use. For instance, a touchdown results in six points in fantasy baseball. For the kicker, field goals are awarded three points but four to five points if the kick goes for more than 40 to 50 yards. Additionally, the kickers receive one additional point for every touchdown and two points for the player who scores on a two-point conversion.

Trading

In fantasy football, trading players is easy. You don’t have to dish out cash from your magic wallet because you can easily trade players by submitting a deal before a deadline. You and your buddies can also form your own system for trading in order to prevent people from teaming together to form one super fantasy football team.

The Playoffs

Before you invite your friends to a game and bring out your NFL flasks and party food, you must know about the playoffs. During the final two to three weeks of the regular NFL season, the playoff tournament for fantasy football is held. The system for scoring is the same as the regular fantasy football season. Lastly, the championship league only begins when there are two teams left in the playoffs.
