A great free-kick taker, Ronaldinho’s goal scoring record is excellent for a midfielder and would be more than respectable for a forward. The best modern winger, and best player in any position, in my opinion is the Portuguese and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. With pace, skill, aggression, determination and power, he is the ultimate footballer. Still only 23 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo has already won two FA Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

As part of the three-pronged Manchester United attack, Ronaldo has been a revelation scoring more than any other United player in their double-winning season. Ronaldo’s ability to head the ball is unusual for a winger, shown by his headed goal in United’s win over Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League Final.

Yet to win the FIFA Player of the Year, Ronaldo has won almost every major individual honour in the game. With so many years ahead in his career, there is no limit to what Cristiano Ronaldo can achieve for both club and country. He could go on to be the greatest player ever to play the game of soccer, although there could be some competition from the likes of Lionel Messi, Alexandre Pato and Victor Moses.

When Eric Cantona retired in 1997, Keane took over as club captain, although he missed most of that season due to a cruciate ligament injury. He returned the following season and helped United to scooping their famous treble of Champions League, Premiership and FA Cup. In 2000 he was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year after leading United to their sixth Premiership title in eight years. Overall, Keane would win seven Premierships, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and a European Cup and was the most successful captain in the club’s history. He unexpectedly left Manchester United by mutual consent in November 2005, joining Celtic. His United testimonial was between these two clubs with Keane playing a half for each of the sides, the capacity crowd was the largest crowd ever for a testimonial in England, all proceeds were given to Keane’s favourite charity, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The recent news regarding the retired Italian footballer Gianfranco Zola becoming the new West Ham United manager has brought many smiles and positive thoughts to the English team fans.  

Zola’s professional career background is very extend as he played for many senior Italian clubs including; Napoli, Parma and Cagliari but he spent his longest period outside Italy when he played for Chelsea from 1996 to 2003 where he achieved with the team two FA Cup victories, one League cup win in 1998, one UEFA Cup win and the 1998 European Super Cup besides being voted as Chelsea’s greatest player ever.

At the press conference with the London media Zola was very happy with his new task with the Blues and he expressed that “Football is joy. The best part of the game comes when you are enjoying what you’re doing,” he said. “So my first target will be to make it as enjoyable as possible for the players.”

He also pressed on the issue that his 20-year of experience have make him believe in playing offensive football as well as trust the hard work and a deep commitment but the most important thing is to make the players feel comfortable among each other and the possibility to talk openly as a group with a common goal.

Besides the Italian other candidates were also interviewed for the position, along some of the names mentioned there were; the Italian Roberto Donadoni as well as the Croatian Coach Slaven Bilic and John Collins, but at the end the Blues chose Zola who became West Ham’s twelfth manager with a three year contract. The former 42-year-old Italian forward and incredible talented striker retired only in 2005 and immediately began his coaching career back in his home land.

 

Zola’s mission ahead is not easy and he is very aware of this fact particularly due to his short experience managing clubs which has been one of the main critics he has received in the short period since the news became public. Another problem could be that the Premier League season is already on course with most English teams already in position with their moves in acquiring new players and new directors working for a common goal. 

Over the weekend West Ham’s encounter with the West Bromwich Albion did not go very well as they lost by 3 to 2, one goal difference that was a real disappointment for many fans. But let’s not forget Zola has not yet taken full charge of the team and this will happen until next week, he will then have the time to plan and guide his players in the way he trusts to be more suitable for the strategies he will implement to win this year’s title in the Premier League.

The team, which has had some of the best runs in football history, specially in the 1980s and 90s , has been going through a bad patch in its history since the year 2002, losing against weaker teams, having poor playing spells and being dogged by controversies both within and outside the club. However, the team still has a major fan following, owing to its past successes which include five Super Bowl victories, five NFC championships and seventeen Division championships wins. The San Francisco 49ers are the only NFL team, apart from the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers to have won the Super Bowl a record five times. On top of this, the Niners have also been responsible for giving American football some of its greatest heroes like Steve Young, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott.

Ever since their inception in 1946, the San Francisco 49ers have been based in San Francisco, playing all their home matches in San Francisco while having their club and practice sessions in Santa Clara. Unlike most football teams, the team has retained its first and only name, which is reminiscent of the California gold rush of 1849.

The 49ers had always been a mediocre team from the 40s till the end of the 70s, winning some matches while losing even more and their exploits were nothing much to either inspire a great fan following or to write home about. However, all this changed in the 1980s, when the team managed to win four Super Balls in one decade. Not only this, they missed the playoffs only twice during these ten years. It was during these golden years that the team also threw up a number of superbly talented players like receiver and quarterback Joe Montana, receiver Dwight Clark and running back Earl Cooper.

As of late, apart from being mired in a number of controversies ranging from long drawn out battles over ownership to leaking out of non public training videos, the team also has not been making any great waves in the championships arena. The last and most recent brick in the wall has been the team’s proposed move to Santa Clara for playing their games also. Around the end of the year 2006, negotiations that were on between the 49ers SF and the city of San Francisco regarding the building of a privately funded stadium came to an end with the 49ers management pulling out of the deal due to undisclosed reasons and deciding to move to Santa Clara for good. Last heard, plans were afoot to build a state of the art playing facility in Santa Clara, to be completed by the year 2012. This decision of the team management has delivered a further blow to 49ers SF fans in San Francisco.
