How come some soccer balls are harder while others are softer?

Will asked:

Are different soccer balls just different like that or can you make a “hard” ball into a soft ball? If they are different how can you tell which ones are hard and which ones are soft? Because the hard ones are killing my feet….

Mark Burdett asked:

I remember the first time I attended a live football match at Wembley Stadium. Walking up Wembley Way you could almost smell the excitement and as the twin towers came into view I could feel my heart racing. As we went through the turnstiles we were finally inside and just a few short steps later I was presented with a site that still lives with me today. As I walked up the steps to the terraces, darkness was overtaken by a bright blue sky and the lush Wembley grass which heroes of mine, past and present, had adorned. The next 90 minutes, much like the following 30 years, seemed to race by and my memory of one of the greatest days of my life remains in tact to this day.

Sports fans throughout the world I am sure can associate with my own memories. From watching the Cubs at Wrigley Field to one of the great Milan teams at the San Siro or another Australian victory at the MCG, sports fan can concentrate on the team and sport they love due to not just their heroes on the field but because of the unsung workers who make the experience and their safety possible.

Just some examples of these unsung heroes include the catering staff who down the years have provide sports fans with treats ranging from a pie and cup of Bovril to a beer and a hot dog. Whilst certain celebrity chefs would I am sure rage against such food being served up sports fans go to sporting events to be entertained, to be with friends and to cheer on their team. We do not go for the 3 course meal, the finest wine or indeed prawn sandwiches.

And whilst the beer and burger are unsung heroes of a many a sporting event, even more important to the fan and event are the people who make the day run without trouble. The ladies and gentlemen who work in stewarding and security roles are often subject to much abuse from travelling fans but without these people sporting events simply would not be possible.

And modern sporting security staff now use the very latest technology and equipment available to ensure your day is safe and sound. From CCTV cameras that can monitor and control crowd congestion to electronic turnstiles using credit card types tickets your day is likely to be safer than ever before.

Another advance in the world of sports security has seen security staff and stewards use modern two way radios to stay in touch with each other. With 2 way radio like the Motorola XTN446 staff at sports stadiums, venues and arenas can stay in touch over a wide area so to make sure your sporting day goes without incident.

Modern radio communications are now common place in sporting venues throughout the world and you are now more likely to see someone with a two way radio than you are someone with a rattle.

Great days at sporting events live within the memory for a lifetime so the next time you are with friends cheering on your team take a moment to think of the unsung heroes who make it all possible.

How would somebody looking to getting into coaching in the NFL go about doing that? Would you have to contact a team, or is it better to start off in college?

Gerry McDonnell asked:

There is nothing more annoying than a parent who talks endlessly about how ‘clever’ or ‘sporty’ their child is, before whipping out a picture of some spotty two foot hooligan tucking in to the contents of his nostril.

My Goliath though, is genuinely bright for his age. The wee lad can speak about 10 words now; that’s three more than Paul Merson.

The little fellow will definitely be a footballer when he grows up. The last time we had a kick around in the garden he nutmegged me twice; nobody’s regretted opening their legs on two separate occasions since Mrs Neville. You won’t regret a bet on Manchester United at 3/10 to waltz past Wigan in a one-sided FA Cup semi.

If the media are to be believed, and you’ll never find a more honest bunch of lads, Jose Mourinho is considering managing England when his tenure expires at Stamford Bridge.

This would be the greatest result for the average Englishman since Gareth Gates wore down Jordan with a pizza and some of the longest chat-up lines in history.

Chelsea have already beaten Blackburn on three occasions this season, a fourth win at 4/7 will set up the most eagerly awaited showdown since Peter Andre narrowly defeated Gareth Gates in a bare-knuckled 15 round extravaganza.

A few people are beginning to question Arsene Wenger, but Aristotle was once mocked when he suggested the Earth was round. Rumours of Arsenal’s demise have been leaked prematurely, they can return to winning ways against Bolton at a huge 8/11.

Liverpool are finishing the season with aplomb; Bellamy I think his name is. The Pool have won their last three against Manchester City by a single goal; another Liverpool victory is advised at 10/11.

Charlton’s recovery in recent weeks has been nothing short of sensational. The Addicks are on a real high, they can snatch an invaluable point from Goodison Park at 5/2.

Aston Villa return to the Riverside for the first time since a 4-0 cakewalk led to a visionary Middlesbrough fan hurling his season ticket at Steve McClaren. A punt on the Villa at 12/5 will lead to a healthy prophet.

It’s the Blades versus the Hammers at Bramall Lane; that’s more tools than you’d find in a Peter Andre fan club. It’s a must-win game for both teams; I’m siding with the rejuvenated West Ham at 2/1.

When I suggested that Wigan were a good bet for relegation in my pre-season write-up, I received more stick than a Manchester United fan in Rome. Another Tottenham win at 7/5 will place the cat well and truly amongst the pigeons.

I’m not too sure about Fulham’s decision to sack Chris Coleman a mere three days before a massive match away to Reading. I guess Mohammed Al Fayed wants to guarantee at least one decent result against the Royals. The arrival of Lawrie ‘Dirty’ Sanchez can inspire the Cottagers to a hard-fought point at 12/5.

David James is the Pauline Fowler of the football world; you wouldn’t want to get involved in a conversation with him, but he’s the man to see if you need a clean sheet. The fashion icon needs one more shutout to break the all-time Premiership record; a home fixture against Newcastle can land a Portsmouth win at 11/10 and a new record for Calamity at 6/4.

Arsenal, Portsmouth, Man Utd, Tottenham and Chelsea form a 16/1 weekend accer that is so candid, Peter Andre has decided to share his life story via the medium of a new single. ‘What was I thinking’ is released in all good record shops on Monday morning.

vdh104 asked:

I am starting a youth soccer imtermural league and am a little uncertain on how big to strip the feild. I read that a 40 yard x 70 yard feild is good, but do you still strip the 6 and 18 the same way or the center circle?

Chris asked:

Betting on yourself to lose – the Sheffield Wednesday Three (1965):

It was the Sunday People that actually broke the story of a football betting scam to the Nation in 1965. Ex-England footballers Tony Kay and Peter Swan, together with their Sheffield Wednesday team mate David Layne had been betting on themselves to lose. The story came years after the three had been involved in a game they lost at Ipswich Town.

Tony Kay later admitted to placing a £50 bet that his Wednesday side would lose to Ipswich and they eventually lost 2-0. When the bet was discovered some three years later, he was convicted with his team mates of match fixing, fined £150, banned from football for life and sentenced to four months in jail.

Gay Future – Cartmel on August Bank Holiday Monday (1974):

One of the most famous horse racing betting scams of all involved trainer Anthony Collins and a horse named Gay Future. Basically, Collins plotted up a gamble on his charge for a race at Cartmel on Bank Holiday Monday. According to the form book, all of Gay Future’s previous form had been moderate to say the least. However, it later transpired that Collins had not run Gay Future in these races and had instead run a far worse horse in his place.

On the day of the Cartmel race, with a string of apparently ordinary form figures by his name, Gay Future was sent off at 10/1. Collins and his syndicate protected the price of the horse by backing it in doubles and trebles with two other stablemates who were later withdrawn. In fact, they never even left the stable. All this meant that all the doubles and trebles turned into one big single bet on one of the day’s easiest winners. Gay Future bolted up by 15 lengths and was returned at 10/1. Bookmakers became suspicious and the syndicate was later convicted of fraud and fined.

In The Money – Hatherleigh Selling Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot (1978)

In the Money recorded an effortless 20 length success in a weak seller having been backed by horse race betting fanatics from massive prices into 8/1. It later turned out that In the Money was actually a far better beast who went by the name of Cobbler’s March who had already won five races before. Trainer John Bowles paid the price though as he was banned for 20 years.

Flockton Grey – Leicester 2 year-old maiden (1982)

Flockton Grey landed a massive gamble when winning by 20 lengths at first time of asking at Leicester racecourse on 29th March 1982. As a debutant from an extremely low profile yard he was priced up at 10/1 and his owners placed a huge bet on him that would return £200,000.

However, they had no intention of actually running the real Flockton grey in the contest and instead ran a far more physically developed three year old in his place called Good Hand. Unfortunately for Ken Richardson and Stephen Wiles, the two behind the scam, the ‘ringer’ was simply too good and won by a record winning margin. It was the size of the winning margin that caused a huge amount of suspicion and the police were soon involved as bookmakers refused to pay out.

The investigators soon found that Good Hand had a scar on his foreleg (unlike Flockton Grey) and the racecourse vet also noted that the winner had teeth too developed for a two-year-old. Both men were caught and charged with conspiracy to defraud. Richardson was warned off by the jockey club for 25 years.

Far Eastern Betting Syndicate – Floodlight Failures (1997)

In one of the most unusual football betting scams, a team of three Malaysians fronted an illegal Betting Syndicate that famously disrupted Premiership matches in 1997 by switching off the floodlights during the game.

They realized that they could make incredible sums of cash, cashing on in the popularity of English football betting in Malaysia, by cutting the power when the score was in their favour. They were eventually caught red handed trying to black out a game between Charlton Athletic and Liverpool early in 1997. Two Malaysians and one of the ring leaders were found at the ground three days before the game with a ‘circuit breaker’.

They were attempting to plant the device and control it remotely 72 hours later. They allegedly offered Charlton security Guard Roger Firth £20,000 to let them into the Valley. The same syndicate had been behind attempts to fix two other matches, the first at a West Ham and Crystal Palace game at Upton Park, and the second at Selhurst Park, where Wimbledon were playing Arsenal. In both matches the lights failed when the scores were level.

Hansie Cronje – South Africa v England (January 2000)

At the time, pundits hailed it as one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship when Hansie Cronje worked with England’s captain Nasser Hussain to try and get a result from the rain affected Centurion Test match. What later emerged was a cricket betting scandal that would rock the sport. Instead of letting the match fizzle out into a rain-effected draw, the captains agreed a double forfeiture of innings – unheard of in Test match history.

South Africa had already won the series so the move was simply seen as a crowd pleasing gesture. However, it later turned out that Cronje had done a deal with South African bookmaker Marlon Aronstam to ensure that there was a result of some kind. Aronstam didn’t care who won as he backed both sides at massive prices and simply cheered on a result – England eventually won. Cronje was famously given around £5000 and a leather jacket for his role in the scam.

How do points work in the NFL for quarterbacks?

NJM133 asked:

Tomlinson had 30 touchdowns thus equalling 180 points and the new NFL record which beat Paul Hornung’s 176. Paul Hornung got his 176 on 15 touchdowns, 15 field goals, and 41 extra points; he also threw for two touchdowns but they do not include them in his point total. Why not?. Why don’t quarterbacks like Marino and Manning count? 48 and 49 touchdowns should be 288 and 294 points repsectively and the NFL record by far. I have looked all over the internet for an answer but I could not find an explanation anywhere.

Gregg Hall asked:

I have been a fan of football as far back as I can remember, from before I started actually playing the game at the age of eight. It has always been enjoyable for me both to play and to watch, although now that I am over 40 I do mostly watching. Okay, I only watch!

If you are a fan of college football you had to enjoy last season no matter which team was your favorite, the season played out right for a change with the top teams and as it turns out, and the top players battling each other. I don’t think I will ever forget the final seconds of the National Championship game with Vince Young of the undefeated Texas Longhorns almost single-handedly beating USC. Vince Young is probably one of the greatest players to ever play the game as far as just pure raw talent goes. I can’t wait to see him this season as he plays for the Tennessee Titans.

Another young Quarterback I watched last year was actually I high school senior by the name of Tim Tebow, who was named 2005 quarterback of the year. I watched his state championship game where in one play he ran right up the middle of the field for 70 yards and carried a guy for the last ten on his back! He was recruited by the Florida Gators and in the spring game he actually through for more yards and had a higher passing completion percentage than the starter, Chris Leak. This will be an interesting situation to watch as well.

Will Big Ben be back at full ability after his near death experience motor cycle accident? I guess we will have to watch and see. One thing is for sure this season looks to be a promising one for excitement with one of the best drafts in years as far as talent is concerned. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. Will Reggie Bush be able to show us something from New Orleans? How will Matt Leinart do in Arizona? Will Vernon Davis help to turn the 49ers around?

There will be so many exciting players to watch it will be hard to choose which game I follow. One thing is for certain though when the Tennessee Titans and the Atlanta Falcons Play I want to see that. Those teams have advantages over every other team for practicing against Vince Young and Michael Vick in being able to practice with the real thing. It will be an interesting match up to say the least.

What would it take for the NFL to make the front page of the newspaper during the offseason?

The Colt Brennan Cult Leader asked:

Excluding the draft. What event would land the NFL a front-page article? Would it take a Mitchell’s List? Would it take a death (I sure hope not)? What would it take for the 4/2 front page headline (4/1 is April Fool’s Day, so I’ll skip it) to be about the NFL other than the draft itself?

That’s Wednesday for those who don’t know.
im not talking front page of the sports, im talking like the first thing you see when you unfold the newspaper properly.
